Item Build

Starting Items

you start with 475g
Doran's RingSapphire Crystal

If you're gonna be fightin' you want the beefy stats of doran's ring. If you think this will be a passive farmfest, sapphire crystal isn't bad to get a headstart on tear.

Core Build

Tear of the GoddessRod of AgesIonian Boots of LucidityShushei's Mana Jug

If possible, don't recall until you get at least 700g to buy tear. If you can back with 1025 gold, pick up tear + boots. Generally you're going to want tear first no matter what, unless you simply cannot survive in lane. In which case, another doran's ring may help you farm. After tear + boots, start on rod of ages. It's great for sustain and getting it early helps you deal decent damage while surviving. Remember, Zilean's biggest weakness is dying before being able to use ult.

Using my recommended runes/masteries, you will have a base of 5% CDR (4% from masteries, 1% from scaling CDR glyph). 5% CDR + 15% from boots of lucidity + one 20% CDR item will get you to 40% efficiently. Zilean is the most mana-hungry champion in the game. Getting 3 items to fix mana may seem like overkill, but it's absolutely worth it.

Defensive Items

Frozen HeartBanshee's VeilGuardian AngelZhonya's Hourglass

When you're up against a team with multiple assassins or an extremely dive-heavy team comp, consider some defensive items. If you die without getting to ult, you're going to be a very sad clock man. Frozen heart + Zhonya's is a great option against a fed ADC or physical damage assassin. Meanwhile Banshee's Veil or Guardian Angel are good choices if they have a team with the possibility of picking you off, like Blitzcrank or Morgana.

Here's an example of an offense-oriented Zilean build with no additional defensive items

Final Item build Example 2

Ionian Boots of LucidityArchangel's StaffRod of AgesFrozen HeartZhonya's HourglassGuardian Angel

When you absolutely, positively, must survive. If your team has plenty of damage without you already, consider going for a more defensive build where you can more easily get into valuable positions in teamfights.

I'm putting it all in one big section

Before you enter lane, assess your enemy mid laner and jungler. If you're likely to be able to harass safely, make sure to bully your enemy laner as much as possible. Very few people will respect Zilean's huge base damage, and it's easy to get a kill as early as level 2 to 3. Try not to back before getting at least 700g for tear, and remember to use W often to get your R's cooldown back.

After finishing tear, work on building up a rod of ages ASAP, probably starting with the blasting wand. Afterwards, boots of lucidity into fiendish codex into finishing Shushei's Mana Jug will be your go-to method of capping CDR while having plenty of mana to keep casting spells. If possible, get blue as early and as often as you can. Zilean with near-infinite mana is absolutely terrifying.

As you move into lategame, consider your role in your team. If your team has plenty of damage, prioritize a more support/utility playstyle, focusing on getting your key players into position. For example, if your jungler got ahead early, roaming with them and getting them into position for easy kills with time warp is hugely beneficial for your team. If you opt for a more damage-oriented role, you're likely to be using time warp on yourself to maintain positioning to repeatedly bomb the targets that you need to kill.

Above all, Zilean is a teamwork-oriented champion. His true potential only shines when you and your team are on the same wavelength. If every time you speed someone with E, or ult a low health target just for them to turn tail and run, you're better off looking to build as much damage as you can and saving your ult for yourself or an absolutely certain allied death. Remember that Zilean's ult lasts 7 seconds in classic and will usually fully heal a non-tank. That said, if your team is coordinating well, using your ult early on an ally that's engaging is extremely powerful. The entire enemy team can either ignore them for at least 7 seconds as they start killing the enemy squishies, or, more likely, at least one person on the enemy team will focus the person engaging, causing them to pop right back up in the center of their team at full health.

Always strive to create no-win situations for the enemy team. If someone is out of position, speeding up an ally with an easy disable can lead to easy picks, for example.

Other fun tips:

A useful trick is double-bombing minions. If the enemy laner is staying just out of your range, get a ranged minion down low enough to die to a single bomb. By using Q>W>Q on a minion with low enough health that the first bomb detonating kills the minion, both bombs go off instantly. This gives you a little extra range, and can even kill someone from around 35-45% health throughout the early to mid game.

Always look for opportunities to coordinate with your jungler to kill anyone you can. Zilean is a gank-assist god, especially with champions that normally have no gapcloser other than walking at someone. A 55% haste on your jungle or a 55% slow on an enemy champion will make even the slowest junglers easily catch up. Make sure to utilize the bomb delivery service of a melee jungler by placing a bomb on them, then giving them a speed boost with E. Timed correctly with a champion like Shaco, Lee Sin, or Jarvan, your gank target will die before they can fight back.

In a situation where you need to get away, it's always best to use your slow on the enemy champion instead of speeding yourself up if it's 1v1. A 55% slow is almost a root on a target without boots of swiftness.

Playing against Zilean:

His biggest weakness is not being able to get his ult off. Especially silence, but any hard CC at the right time is brutal to deal with for Zilean. Champions with displacement abilities like Blitzcrank can also easily take advantage of the respawn time of Zilean's ult. A smart enemy mid-laner will wear down Zilean with superior lane sustain, and use a coordinated gank or high burst like Katarina or Kassadin to kill Zilean before he can ult himself. Another option for some champions like Gragas is to build a few early MR items like merc treads + abyssal and farm until an opportunity presents itself to gank/countergank or roam. Zilean is incredibly mana hungry, so watching his mana bar is key. Earlygame he likely will not have enough mana to consistently use Q>W>Q to harass, while also having mana for a self speed boost and ult. If he over-commits while on low mana, it's possible to turn the tables.

Hi, is there a reason to not put your second point into R until lvl 13?

The only benefit you get on leveling ult is a higher base heal, and with higher mana cost. I actually save ult levels 2 and 3 for level 17 and 18 now. The extra points in E are extremely powerful.
