Starting Items

you start with 475g
Doran's ShieldBoots of SpeedCloth ArmorHealth Potion

With no mana and healing from Perseverance (P), Garen can efficiently use Doran's Shield against auto attackers or low interaction lanes.

Boots of Speed or Cloth Armor allow rushing early Mercury's Treads or Ninja Tabi with more sustain from extra Health Potions.

Sunfire Cape and Stark's Fervor

Sunfire CapeStark's Fervor

Garen has some of the strongest scaling with defensive items in the game thanks to his Courage (W), one of the most powerful defensive abilities in LoL Classic.

Garen also gains considerable power from cooldown reduction, which increases the uptime of his Courage (W). With 40% cooldown reduction, max rank Courage (W) has an uptime of 6 seconds and a cooldown of only 8 seconds!

Sunfire Cape early gives the defensive stats we are looking for while providing consistent damage and wave clear. It allows Garen to both stat-check weaker opponents and quickly farm waves to avoid strong opponents. The further ahead you are, the stronger Sunfire Cape becomes.

Build Sunfire Cape first in physical damage or melee match ups.

Stark's Fervor is a cheap, yet powerful item that yields a lot of cooldown reduction. Between Perseverance (P), Courage (W) and lifesteal, many opponents will becomes completely unable to win a war of attrition against you

Build Stark's Fervor first in mobile ranged match ups, or alongside Hexdrinker when facing magic damage dealers.

Maw of Malmortius and Black Cleaver

Maw of MalmortiusThe Black Cleaver

Garen can build tank items, but he doesn't have to. Some matchups demand damage. You'll never defeat a Warwick in lane building Sunfire Cape.

The Brutalizer first item provides serious all-in threat. Build it first agaisnt squishy ranged lane opponents to kill them in one Decisive Strike (Q) Judgment (E) Demacian Justice (R) Ignite combo.

Hexdrinker and Maw of Malmortius have incredible synergy with Garen and should be built nearly every game.

Between the auto-reset on his Decisive Strike (Q) and rapid hits from his Judgment (E), Garen stacks The Black Cleaver armor shred very quickly. Rush this item against armor stacking opponents or finish it later in the game.

Youmuu's Ghostblade is the most threatening item you can buy against squishy targets.

Tank Options

Spirit of the Ancient GolemSpirit VisageRanduin's OmenForce of NatureGuardian Angel

Spirit of the Ancient Golem is a perfect Garen item. Health, coodlown reduction and tenacity for only 2000g is nearly impossible to pass up.

Spirit Visage is a great item against heavy magic damage and makes it very easy to reach the cooldown reduction cap of 40%.

Randuin's Omen is the best armor to buy if Sunfire Cape was not purchased early on.

Force of Nature is great when you are already cooldown reduction capped.

Guardian Angel helps close out a snowballing game.

Damage Options

Executioner's CallingAtma's ImpalerLast WhisperMercurial ScimitarInfinity Edge

All of these items have their place and can fit well within Garen's core items.

Executioner's Calling has decent synergy with Garen thanks to the ability for his Decisive Strike (Q) and Judgment (E) to apply critical strikes.

Atma's Impaler is a cheap fifth item with impressive stats for the price.

Last Whisper alongside The Black Cleaver multiplies your damage considerably against targets with any bonus armor.

Mercurial Scimitar is great last item when you need Quicksilver Sash to deal with oppressive crowd control abilities.

Infinity Edge makes you do infinite damage.

Boots

Ninja TabiIonian Boots of LucidityMercury's Treads

Ninja Tabi rush is good in a lot of matchups like Tryndamere, Vayne, or Gangplank.

Ionian Boots of Lucidity alongside Stark's Fervor and Spirit of the Ancient Golem will cap cooldown reduction.

Build Mercury's Treads when not building Spirit of the Ancient Golem.

I don't recommend this build, but it is fun.

Summoner Spells

FlashIgniteTeleportGhost

Flash and Ignite make Garen extremely threatening in lane and help him execute targets in the mid game.

Ghost helps compensate for Garen's lack of mobility. You can't deal damage to opponents who can get away from you.

Teleport is always solid and ensures Garen stays on top of the level curve.

Decisive Strike
Courage
Judgment
Demacian Justice

When in doubt max Decisive Strike (Q) first.

Garen's abilities all gain significant power from levelling up. It is crucial that you do not fall behind in experience.

Maxing either Decisive Strike (Q) or Judgment (E) first has merit against different opponents. Always max Decisive Strike (Q) first against ranged opponents.

Courage (W) triples its duration by max level, making it one of the strongest fully maxed skills in the game, but Garen cannot afford to give up offensive power early unless he is already snowballing.

Garen is strong in the early game. With strong early game runes, we can take control of the lane and stay ahead of the curve. Garen needs to get a lead to fully make use of his power as a stat-checking bruiser.

Alternatively, take scaling runes to shore up Garen's mid game in easy match ups like Taric or in match ups where it will be difficult to get an early lead like Gragas.

UTILITY: 7

Garen loves health, resists, and crowd control reduction. We take 23 points in Defense to supplement this.

The remaining points are invested in Utility to reduce the cooldowns of our summoner spells.

Alternatively, play like an assassin with a 21/9/0 setup.

Why play Garen?

If you like playing with your health bar as a resource, deleting minion waves instantly, and doing front flip dunks on your opponents before righteously executing them, Garen is your man.

Garen can win or survive any lane thanks to having no mana, free health regeneration, high damage and strong wave clear. With Ghost or Ignite and the ability to parry the brunt of the opponent's damage with Courage (W), his all in threat is not to be underestimated.

In the mid game, Garen becomes a damage soaking juggernaut who threatens to run over the opposing team if they don't pay attention to him. When playing from ahead and with Sunfire Cape in hand, Garen is one of the most oppressive champions in the game and has the power to snowball games out of control.

Garen is a great split pusher with the ability to clear waves instantly and either do significant tower damage with Decisive Strike (Q) or quickly create an advantageous fight with his teammates.

In teamfights, Garen spends his health bar to make space and deal damage, leveraging his Courage (W) to soak enemy cooldowns. He can easily take a risky flank to dive the opposing back line, knowing he can run out with his Courage (W) and Maw of Malmortius. Garen can also play a peeling role for his carries. Kassadin must think twice before Riftwalk (R)ing into a Decisive Strike (Q).
