Starting Items

you start with 475g
Doran's RingHealth PotionMana Potion

Standard, Cho'Gath has very good sustain and can trade heavily with champions who do not have innate sustain in their kit

If against heavy AD threat such as Pantheon on then it might be worth to Go Cloth Armor Health Potion x5

Core Build

Rod of AgesNashor's ToothMercury's TreadsWarmog's ArmorFrozen HeartForce of Nature

This is a build I will end up with, it gives you 40% cdr, tankiness, and dueling ability. Get Ninja Tabi if the enemy is mostly AD, especially if you are facing tryndamere or jax, etc.

If you feel like you are too behind to get nashors tooth, you can opt for a Frozen Heart or Spirit Visage second based upon your matchups. Remember, your 2nd item needs to be a 20% CDR item or you are gating your potential.

All builds can be customized to the state of the game but the constant remains: 20% CDR Item 2nd, whether that is Nashors Tooth, Frozen Heart, or Spirit Visage, etc.

Flex Items

Spirit VisageSunfire CapeRanduin's OmenRylai's Crystal ScepterRunic BulwarkThornmailAtma's ImpalerAbyssal Scepter

These are some items not listed on the main build that may be useful, just be careful to make sure your build includes 40% cdr by your 4th item and 20% cdr by your 2nd item.

Cho'Gath loves extra HP where he can get it but he also can more freely build items that give stats other than HP due to his R passive giving him an extra 900hp at 6 stacks.

Common builds I will end up with will look like:
ROA ->Boots -> Nashors -> Warmogs -> Spirit Visage or Frozen Heart - > Force of Nature/Randuins/Thornmail/Rylais.

Summoner Spells

TeleportIgnite

Flash TP in hard lanes or if you expect to get camped.

Flash Ignite if you feel confident in the matchup/ want to dominate your lane.

Rupture
Feral Scream
Vorpal Spikes
Feast

W max is the most reliable and easy to land, it increases damage and silence duration which is huge. Q is saved for last because of how unreliable it is. Against good players it is extremely hard to consistently land Rupture. If you max it in an early fight and miss it then you have given your opponent an opening to punish you because you highest damage normal ability is down.

Depending on your build and playstyle you may consider maxxing Q second instead of E. If you are versus more melee focused champs then it is worth it to max E to brawl with them, if you are against more ranged champions and need to enable your teammates/can't get on the enemies to even use E then max Q second.

Runes

stndrd Runes

  • 9× Mark of Attack Speedmark
  • 9× Seal of Armorseal
  • 9× Glyph of Scaling Magic Resistglyph
  • 3× Quintessence of Movement Speedquint
+9 Armor+15.3% Attack Speed+32.4 Magic Resist @18+4.5% Movement Speed

Cho'Gath benefits from the extra attack speed which will lead to more damage output than taking traditional mage runes such as mpen.

IMPORTANT: In league of legends it is significantly easier to build armor than magic resist. Most matchups you will vs in top lane in Classic will be mostly physical damage.

I recommend taking Scaling MR glyphs as the MR difference between flat and scaling is about 22~ at level 18. You are essentially sneaking an extra null magic mantle into your build which is 400g.

Additionally Cho'Gath values movement speed over ability power especially early.

One of Cho'Gath's weakpoints is how immobile he is, sometimes an enemy gets away because you can't chase, sometimes you get ganked because you are slow. Movement speed quints to enable your sticking power and mobility.

9/21/0 is a standard page. I take attack speed in offense because the 4% cdr just becomes inefficient because you will be building items that will get you to 40% CDR anyways which is the hard cap for classic.

Here is a deeper analysis on the 4% CDR rune and my rationale for the 4% attack speed rune.
None of Cho'Gath's abilities gain reduced cooldowns from ranking up, they can ONLY be reduced from cooldown reduction, here are the numbers.
By the numbers below it is up to your judgement call on whether or not you think the 4% CDR will actually make a meaningful change.
In my opinion none of the jumps that include 4% CDR are impressive and eventually after building 40% CDR you are losing gold efficiency in the late game.
Is the 4% attack speed particularly impressive? Not really, but on Cho'Gath you will never reach the attack speed cap so it is ALWAYS more gold efficient the longer the game goes on.

Defense tree:

Additionally remember to take the armor/magic resist runes applicable to the matchup.

If you are versus someone like Tryndamere or any champion which relies on critical strikes or they have multiple champions that like to crit it is reasonable to swap one point in tenacious or juggernaut for reinforced armor.

2nd Item Debate

In general, Rod of Ages Nashor's Tooth is a decent 2 item spike BUT it really is more of a "win harder" item and can be detrimental if you are behind consider a build of Rod of Ages Frozen Heart or Spirit Visage depending on damage types and then either getting a warmogs, or the other one you did not get.

Example builds
Rod of Ages Frozen Heart Spirit Visage Warmog's Armor Mercury's Treads Rylai's Crystal Scepter

ALTERNATE BUILD
Frozen Heart Spirit Visage Rylai's Crystal Scepter Warmog's Armor Ninja Tabi last item whatever is needed.

Early Game

Use your W to poke your enemies down, hold your Q for when the enemy is last hitting a minion or if you are facing an enemy who can jump on you such as Jax or Tryndamere . It is okay to take disadvantaged trades if you have a lane state where you can still kill creeps to sustain and they have no innate sustain. For instance, Malphite has no innate sustain other than potions or items so in general you can perform this strategy.

Mid Game

After you build to at least 20% CDR then you can start stacking Feast more effectively. Without the CDR, your ultimate is down too long and leaves you vulnerable. But this is all situational, if you find you have more downtime then you stack earlier. However, the speed of the game right now sees constant fighting and a Cho'Gath without his ultimate is like a bird without wings.

Matchups

Nasus You completely dogwalk him early but he has comparable sustain so it is hard to actually kill him. Late game if you allow him to scale he can eventually beat you but it usually turns into a wet noodle contest. At a certain point in this matchup it is extremely hard to genuinely go for lethal, and he will have little to no kill threat on you 1v1 so you can stack feast early.

Skarner He has incredible dueling potential and might look to kill you, he has no innate sustain other than his shitty E ability so as long as you dont die to the all in you can win this matchup handily. Beware of early game level 1-2 cheeses as he can beat you. Try to kite him into your minion wave so he takes extra damage.

Jax Since you take MS quints you can usually walk away from his level 1 counterstrike shenanigans. Max W and poke him out due to his lack of sustain. Hold Q for Leap Strike (Q) and take short trades. Jax will usually win all-ins if you do not soften him up. Early game is should be straight forward and easy but after he gets Trinity Force Blade of The Ruined King powerspike you are usually cooked and will need assistance to deal with him.

Tryndamere You have early dueling power vs him if he tries to fight you in your minion wave but overall will outscale you and be an annoying threat all game. You will need to go defensive runes and have your jungler/mid roam to kill him. Beware of overextending in a long lane vs him because it is hard to lane Rupture (Q) on him once he gets a good amount of CDR so you can find yourself getting ran down.
